Window Installation Series
Visitors entering the Window Installations are immediately confronted by wooden sash, re-contextualized outside of their original buildings and are compelled to ask questions with regards to the circumstances leading to the removal of the window sash from their buildings of origin. The sash, suspended from their sash chains are displayed at a level typical for a contextualized window. Set within the white walls of a gallery, the window sash are re-contextualized as aesthetic artifacts in a state of suspension engaging the viewer to closely examine their historic glass panes, hardware fixtures and wooden members, typically hidden under their window frames. The featuring of material elements such as counterbalance weights and chains creates an added interest in the original mechanism of double-hung sash, hidden within pockets of the window frame. Displayed outside of their original context and bathed in natural and in some cases, artificial gallery light, the windows invite the viewer to change their perception of these otherwise functional building elements and reconsider them as authentic works of rare craftsmanship.
